f the physical kingdom of Avalon is ruled by the laws of men, the spirit of the Avalonian people is controlled by the Avalonian Church: the Church of the Beathacrann. This religious organization has been linked by an ancient covenant to a sentient tree since the dawn of time: The Beathacrann, the Tree of Life.
This church is very powerful and ruled with an iron hand by its supreme leader: the Cardinal Augustus. It is he who controls the hierarchy of the Avalonian Faith.
This hierarchy is composed of two types of clergy. The secular clergy ranges from the simple country priest who provides holy teachings in the most remote parts of Avalon to the seven Archbishops, representatives of the Cardinal in each Barony.
The counterpoint to the secular clergy in the hierarchy is the regular clergy: the Temple. The temple is divided in three monasteries: Matins, Vespers and Complies. Each of these monasteries is managed by an Abbot in charge of the religious teachings and a Bailiff in charge of the military instruction. The Templars are feared and respected throughout Avalon and are blessed by the Beathacrann. Like the most important nobles and renowned warriors, each of them has received a seed of the Beathacrann and become a host of the Tree of Life.
This seed develops by feeding on the fluids of the host and grows into a powerful vegetable symbiotic parasite. When the hosts die, their bodies are brought back to the Beathacrann to nurture it as they decay - maintaining its power and honoring the centuries-old pact that links Avalon to the fate of the Tree.
